โ˜ ๏ธ The most important fact about lead

Unlike most contaminants, lead has no safe threshold. The CDC and EPA both state that any level of lead exposure in children can cause permanent neurological damage. The current EPA "action level" of 15 ppb is not a safety limit โ€” it's an infrastructure trigger. Water with 14 ppb of lead is still dangerous.

There Is No Safe Level of Lead in Water

This isn't alarmism โ€” it's the official position of the EPA, the CDC, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Lead is a neurotoxin. It attacks the developing brain and nervous system with effects that are irreversible. No amount has been found to be safe, particularly for children under 6 and pregnant women.

Yet most Americans have no idea whether lead is in their water. It has no taste. No smell. No color. The only way to know is to test.

How Lead Gets Into Your Tap Water

Here's the counterintuitive truth: lead almost never comes from the source water itself. It comes from your home's own plumbing. The water leaves the treatment plant clean, then picks up lead as it travels through old pipes on the way to your faucet.

Lead service lines

The pipe that runs from the city main to your home โ€” called the service line โ€” was commonly made from lead in homes built before 1986. In Louisville and many older Indiana cities, tens of thousands of these lines are still in the ground. Every time water sits in that pipe and then flows through your tap, it carries dissolved lead with it.

Lead solder in copper pipes

Even if your service line is copper, the joints connecting your pipes were commonly soldered with lead-containing solder until it was banned in 1986. Homes built between the 1950s and 1986 are particularly at risk. The older the solder, the more it leaches.

Brass fixtures and fittings

Many faucets, valves, and fittings โ€” even those sold as "lead-free" before 2014 โ€” were legally allowed to contain up to 8% lead. That's enough to leach measurable amounts into water that sits in contact with them overnight. This is why "first-draw" water from the tap in the morning tends to have the highest lead levels.

โš ๏ธ The Flint effect

Flint, Michigan made international news in 2014 โ€” but the lead pipe crisis is nationwide. The EPA estimates it will take decades and billions of dollars to replace all lead service lines across the US. In the meantime, filtration is the fastest and most reliable protection available.

Health Effects of Lead Exposure

Lead accumulates in the body over time. Every exposure adds to the total burden stored in your bones and soft tissue. The effects depend on the amount and duration of exposure โ€” but with children, even low-level chronic exposure causes measurable harm.

๐Ÿง

Brain Development

Lead interferes directly with the developing nervous system. Even low doses reduce IQ, attention span, and impulse control โ€” permanently. No treatment reverses this damage.

๐Ÿ“š

Learning & Behavior

Children with elevated blood lead levels are significantly more likely to have learning disabilities, ADHD diagnoses, and behavioral problems in school.

๐Ÿคฐ

Pregnancy

Lead crosses the placental barrier. Exposure during pregnancy is linked to premature birth, low birth weight, and developmental delays in newborns.

โค๏ธ

Adult Cardiovascular

In adults, chronic low-level lead exposure increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke. Lead stored in bones slowly releases back into the bloodstream throughout life.

๐Ÿฆท

Kidney Damage

The kidneys filter blood continuously. Chronic lead exposure damages kidney function over time, increasing risk of chronic kidney disease in adults.

๐Ÿฉธ

Anemia

Lead interferes with the body's ability to produce hemoglobin. Children with lead poisoning often present with anemia โ€” fatigue, pallor, and weakness.

Signs of Lead Exposure

This is what makes lead so dangerous: most people with lead exposure have no obvious symptoms. The damage happens silently, over months and years, before any outward sign appears. By the time symptoms are obvious, significant harm has already occurred.

When symptoms do appear, they can include:

If your child has been flagged for elevated blood lead levels by a pediatrician, the source is likely environmental โ€” and your water is one of the first things to test.

Lead Pipes in Kentucky & Indiana

Louisville Water Company has publicly acknowledged tens of thousands of lead service lines still active in the city. The utility has a replacement program underway โ€” but it's projected to take years to complete, and in the meantime those lines remain in service.

In Southern Indiana โ€” Clarksville, Jeffersonville, New Albany โ€” aging infrastructure is a documented concern. Many homes built before 1986 in these communities have never had their service lines inspected or replaced.

The only way to know if your specific home is affected is to test your water. Your utility's annual Consumer Confidence Report tells you about source water โ€” it does not tell you about lead levels at your tap, because those are determined by your home's own plumbing, not the treatment plant.

๐Ÿ’ก How to look up your home's service line

Louisville Water Company maintains an online service line material map. Search your address at louisvillewater.com to see whether your line is listed as lead, copper, or unknown. Indiana utilities are required to publish similar inventories โ€” contact your local utility directly.

How to Test Your Water for Lead

There are two ways to test your tap water for lead:

1. Mail-in test kit

You can buy a certified lead water test kit online for $20โ€“$50. You collect a first-draw water sample (water that has sat in the pipes overnight), mail it to a certified lab, and receive results in 1โ€“2 weeks. This is accurate and affordable. Make sure the kit is certified by a state-licensed lab.

2. Professional in-home test

We offer free in-home water testing that covers lead along with other common contaminants. We bring the testing equipment to your home, run the test on-site, and walk you through the results in about 30 minutes. You leave knowing exactly what's in your water and what โ€” if anything โ€” needs to be done about it.

What Actually Removes Lead From Tap Water

Not every filter removes lead. This is critical โ€” buying the wrong filter gives you false confidence while lead continues to pass through.

Filter Type Removes Lead? Notes
Pitcher filter (Brita standard) โœ— No Standard carbon filters do not remove lead
Pitcher filter (Brita Longlast+) โœ“ Yes Specifically certified for lead โ€” check NSF/ANSI 53
Faucet filter (PUR, Brita) โœ“ Some Only if certified NSF/ANSI 53 for lead โ€” check the label
Reverse osmosis (under-sink) โœ“ Yes Highly effective โ€” removes 95โ€“99% of lead
Whole-home filtration โœ“ Yes Protects every tap, shower, and appliance in the home
Boiling water โœ— No Boiling concentrates lead โ€” makes it worse
Running the tap โœ— No Reduces but does not eliminate lead from service lines

The most effective solution for a home with a lead service line or lead solder is a whole-home filtration system certified to remove lead at every point of use โ€” not just the kitchen faucet. Lead exposure doesn't only happen through drinking water. It also comes through cooking, baby formula preparation, and even bathing for young children.

โœ“ What to look for on any filter

Always look for NSF/ANSI 53 certification specifically for lead reduction. NSF/ANSI 42 only covers taste and odor โ€” it does not address lead. These are different certifications. A filter can carry one without the other.

What to Do Next

If you live in a home built before 1986 in Louisville or Southern Indiana, treat your water as potentially lead-contaminated until you have test results that say otherwise. Here's what to do:

  1. Don't use unfiltered tap water for infant formula, cooking, or drinking โ€” especially for children under 6 and pregnant women.
  2. Run your tap for 2 minutes before using water each morning if you don't have a filter โ€” this flushes standing water from lead pipes, though it's not a complete solution.
  3. Test your water โ€” either with a mail-in kit or a free in-home test from us.
  4. Install a certified filter โ€” whole-home filtration is the most thorough solution; under-sink reverse osmosis is a strong alternative for drinking water specifically.
  5. Ask your utility about service line replacement โ€” Louisville Water and many Indiana utilities have programs to replace lead service lines. Get on the list.
